Pokemon: Underground is a tribute series created by Quinn Arthur and Melissa Colley. The series is meant as tribute and is a non-for-profit production. The stories do not center around the story or characters created by GameFreak inc., and any characters referenced from the franchise share name only.

The Idea

Pokémon Underground is a comic series developed by myself, Quinn Arthur, and Melissa Colley. The whole project began after we had a nostalgic conversation about the wonderful world of pokémon created by GameFreak Inc., and how the world they have created, in reality, should be much, much more aggressive and hard edged than it is let out to be. So, taking this new found inspiration, I drew an image of our main protagonist Sol standing in the decaying Saffron city. There was something about this image of a grim-dark pokémon trainer that made us want to go deeper.

From this single drawing we began formulaing an idea and story around this character, and we asked ourselves: What sort of world does he live in? What sort of challenges does he face daily? Just how difficult or fantastic would this world of monsters be? We just kept running with the idea, fueled by online communities talking about how there should be a "realistic" or "gritty" pokémon series; and to be frank, it has gotten a little out of hand, but that's ok, because here we are.

The story in Underground is that of a rebellion - the over-throwing of a government that has become far too oppressive for its people and country. Our characters are original personas created for the story, and we have tried to avoid rehashing personalities and characters from the original Pokémon universe, yet we do have our tributes and references to the great franchise. Additionally, we've completely overhauled the very land of Kanto itself into a full scale country with different customs, cultures, and even enviroments and landscapes.

The whole project has taught us so much about what it takes to create a comic series. Luckily we have found a story that we can confidently share and work on without risking the loss of our original universe ideas to poor execution. By the time the story or Underground concludes we hope to be experienced enough in the world of graphic novels and comic that we will be able to publish several other story's we are working on. But I digress, I hope you enjoy the series.
